About Me

What specialized training has a Special Education Advocate completed?

Special education advocates stay current on federal and state special education legislation and are well versed on public school district policies. I have been trained through the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates, Inc. (www.copaa.org) on federal and state education laws. There currently is no board certification or licensing of special education advocates in California. I am not a lawyer, do not provide a legal service, nor give legal advice. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) specifies that at the discretion of the parent or the agency, other individuals who have knowledge or special expertise regarding the child may be included as part of the child's individualized education program (IEP) team. (20 U.S.C.  1414 (d) (1) (b) (iv)).

What special skills does a Special Education Advocate possess?
Special education advocates support parents during personally challenging times. I find myself offering support and comfort as well as experienced guidance. I am the parent of a child with special education needs and apply the experiences I have had advocating for my own son toward my work as an advocate for others. I have appealed medical insurance denials, argued for special education eligibility, advocated for students in IEP and 504 meetings, helped file due process complaints, participated in mediation, and negotiated settlement agreements. In my previous career as a pharmaceutical sales representative, I persuaded and was involved in negotiations with many thought leaders in the medical field. I am an effective communicator. I have the ability to remain calm, levelheaded and focused during intense meetings. I have learned in special education advocacy, a persistent, steady demeanor pays off. It is my philosophy to work cooperatively with service providers, District representatives and other authorities within the education system in an effort to establish positive working relationships on behalf of my clients and students and to operate under the principals of collaborative problem solving and management of conflict whenever possible.
